PRECIS workshops

The protocol for receiving PRECIS involves attendance at one of frequently held workshop worldwide.  To date workshops have been held in South Africa, Cuba, Bhutan, Brazil, India, Turkey, Argentina, Ghana, and five in the United Kingdom.

There are generall three international PRECIS workshops per year.

The last UK based workshop was held from 5-7 July 2006 at the University of Reading.  UK based courses are three days in length and are generally held once a year in June or July at the University of Reading 40 kilometres west of London.

Workshops are administered by members of the PRECIS team.  There is no fee or charge associated with attendance at the workshops other than your own accommodation and subsistence charges. 

A sample schedule at a workshop might look something like this:

Monday
A.M.:  Welcome Session:
          Introduction to the PRECIS system
          Regionalisation techniques and regional climate modelling
P.M.:  Demonstration of PRECIS
         “Hands-on” session using the PRECIS user interface to set up and run experiments.

Tuesday
A.M.:  Modelling the climate system and climate change
          The PRECIS regional model
P.M.:  Demonstration of PRECIS data storage system and data processing/display
          Hands-on session on processing and analysing results from PRECIS.

Wednesday
A.M.:  Uncertainties in the development of climate scenarios
          Designing RCM experiments
P.M.:  Presentations from participants on plans for the projects where PRECIS is to be used
          Hands-on session continuing experimenting with the PRECIS interface and analysing results of experiments.

Thursday
A.M.:  Validating and evaluating a regional climate model
          Scenario construction for impacts assessment
          Discussion on data requirements for impacts assessments planned by participants
P.M.:  Installation of PRECIS
          Hands-on session – more work with the user interface, working with sample output data or the installation procedure

Friday
A.M.:  Detailed workplans presented by participants
          Discussion on details of project work, linked impacts work and publications
P.M.:  Plans for follow-up meetings and activities
          Feedback from participants and formal close
